SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The sun makes a big difference in the temperature, if you have a thermometer in the sun versus shade. Plus, surfaces make a difference, especially if you are in a city versus the countryside. Also, the air can feel much hotter depending on the color you wear. If you have a thermometer at home, the temperature recording may be different than our official weather observation stations. This is because of a few reasons. Our official recording comes from a Stevenson’s box which is always shaded and painted white to reduce heat absorption. Plus, this box is placed 4 feet above the ground and in an open field so there is no effect from the surface…..
