Significant Severe Storms Possible Today

LUBBOCK, TX (KLBK)KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley has your Thursday evening severe weather update for June 5, 2025.

Strong to severe storms are expected to develop across the KLBK viewing area late Thursday afternoon, lasting into the overnight hours of Thursday. While not everyone will see severe storms, let alone rainfall, some could see damaging wind gusts, large hail, and possibly even an isolated strong tornado or two. Flash flooding is also expected for some.

ACTIVE ALERTS:

A Tornado Watch has been issued for every single county within the KLBK viewing area through 10 PM CDT / 9 PM MDT tonight. Strong to severe storms are possible for these locations, with the strongest storms capable of producing 80 MPH wind gusts, DVD sized hail (5.00″ in diameter), and isolated strong tornadoes.

THURSDAY

A level 3 out of 5 enhanced risk for severe storms has been issued for a majority of the KLBK forecast area for Thursday. This includes the cities of Bovina, Dimmitt, Hart, Kress, Tulia, Silverton, Dora, Portales, Elida, Muleshoe, Littlefield, Olton, Plainview, Lockney, Hale Center, Morton, Turkey, Petersburg, Abernathy, Floydada, Matador, Roaring Springs, Paducah, Levelland, Sundown, Smyer, Lubbock, Wolfforth, New Deal, Shallowater, Lorenzo, New Home, Slaton, Ralls, Crosbyton, Spur, Dickens, Afton, White River Lake, Guthrie, Tatum, Lovington, Hobbs, Plains, Denver City, Brownfield, Wellman, Tahoka, O’Donnell, Wilson, Post, Lake Alan Henry, Clairemont, Jayton, Seminole, Loop, Seagraves, Welch, Lamesa, Gail, Lake J.B. Thomas, and Fluvanna. A level 2/5 slight risk of severe storms has been issued for Clovis, Elida, Friona, and Childress. Severe storms are most likely within the level 3/5 enhanced risk, but will remain possible in the level 2 slight risk area as well. However, not everyone will see severe weather, let alone rain. Those that do see some could also see some locally heavy rainfall.

The primary concern with any storms that develops will be damaging hail up to DVD sized (5.00″ in diameter), wind gusts as high as 80 MPH, and isolated strong tornadoes. The entire area has the potential to see severe weather. Flash flooding is possible as localized rainfall totals of 2-4″ will be possible. Remember to turn around, don’t drown if you come across a flooded area. Again, not everyone will see severe weather. However, the strongest storms that do develop through the rest of the day will be capable of producing the aforementioned threats.

When it comes to storm arrival times, activity looks to begin to develop initially over western areas around the 1-3 PM CDT time frame. This activity will expand in coverage to the east-southeast, as individual storms also track to the east-southeast. This activity will continue to organize and strengthen, eventually expanding in coverage and bringing a majority of the region measurable rainfall. Again, these are the expected arrival times for storms. Storms will linger for some areas outside of the timeframes listed below. Also, not everyone will see severe weather, let alone rainfall.

Here is a look at one forecast model’s hypothesis as to what could occur with storms overnight tonight. Don’t take this as 100% truth, but rather pay attention to the general areas that will see activity, in addition to the rough time frame impacts could occur. The cold front indicates a rain cooled outflow boundary that will aid initiation across the region. Areas ahead of this outflow boundary will have the highest potential for seeing severe storms during the afternoon and evening hours of Thursday. Behind the boundary, heavy rainfall is expected.
