Virginia Tech has been awarded $5 million by the Army to establish a new level of drone defense

Most of us probably remember that about six months ago, there were many mysterious drone sightings around the country, including in Virginia. Now Virginia Tech has the opportunity to work on better ways to detect and identify the drones.

Virginia Tech’s announcement

According to Cardinal News, Virginia Tech announced that it has received a $5 million award from the Army to establish a new level of drone defense research center on its campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. The money will come from the U.S. Army Futures Command Combat Capabilities Development Command C5ISR Center for a team to improve technologies for drone identification.

About the award

The $5 million award from the Army will create the Counter UAS Research and Testing Center. Virginia Tech National Security Institute and the Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership will lead the way. The primary mission is to help the Department of Defense and law enforcement deal with threats from drone users.
