It’s party time in East Harlem this weekend as the 40th annual 116th Street Festival takes to the streets with a vibrant celebration of Puerto Rican and Hispanic culture. More than half a million individuals are anticipated to swarm the area, immersing themselves in the rhythms, flavors, and artistry of a community that knows how to throw a truly memorable bash. The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. tomorrow and will keep the energy pulsing until 5 p.m.
Puerto Rican culture will dominate the area, with the festival sprawling across 20 city blocks offering diverse activities and performances. Picking up a tan courtesy of the summer sun, PIX11 will be on hand from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., capturing the event’s highlights with a live broadcast from the 122nd Street Stage, so even those who can’t physically attend can join in the fun.
Due to the event, residents and visitors should prepare for a shakeup in their regular travel routes. Traffic will likely be affected as streets shut down; NYPD has announced that Third Avenue between 106th Street and 122nd Street and 116th Street between Lexington Avenue and Second Avenue will be closed at their discretion. Whether taking part or merely trying to navigate through East Harlem, planning ahead could save you a headache…
