EUGENE, Ore. — With weekend temperatures expected to reach the nineties, Lane County officials say they’re monitoring the situation closely – but current forecasts don’t yet meet the threshold for activating formal cooling centers.
Still, the City of Eugene says public facilities like the following are available during regular business hours for anyone needing a break from the heat:
- Downtown, Bethel, and Sheldon public libraries
- Amazon, Echo Hollow, and Sheldon pools
- Spray & play parks at Fairmount, Oakmont, Skinner Butte, Washington, and Umso (formerly Striker Field)
Lane County Public Health emphasizes the importance of cooling off at night, and staying hydrated.
“Heat is more complicated than other things like ice, for example,” explains Serena Jaramillo with Lane County public Health. “There are very specific numbers that you can say, this is going to be very dangerous, and people are going to be at very high risk. But if you’re in the shade, if you have water, if you cool off at night, your body does recover. So, there’s a lot of things like that that we have already put out.”…
