Fishing Report: Releasing chinook smolt into Ship Creek

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The annual Slam’n Salm’n King Derby at Ship Creek is returning, and anglers are vying for winnings – separate from the fish themselves – by reeling in the largest king salmon.

The lives of those very same king salmon began as eggs, which then became smolt raised at the William Jack Hernandez Hatchery in Anchorage before their big day of release.

“Once we open these grates, they’re able to go out into Ship Creek,” said Ryan Ragan with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. ”Ultimately, these fish are going to migrate out into Cook Inlet, and then go as far as they want to go into the ocean, where they will continue to feed and grow.”…
