The Black Student Union at UNC Charlotte strongly condemns the University’s decision to terminate Assistant Director Janique Sanders for her public support of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). This action not only undermines but also silences a dedicated, respected and compassionate advocate for marginalized communities.
The decision to terminate Janique Sanders contradicts the values of inclusivity and commitment to fostering a welcoming campus environment, values that drew many current and incoming students to UNC Charlotte. Janique Sanders has demonstrated her dedication to the UNC Charlotte community through her impactful leadership and her ability to inspire others to embody strong values throughout their journey at the University. The termination of Janique Sanders reflects a significant step backward for UNC Charlotte.
For 55 years, the Black Student Union has been an unwavering voice for students and faculty, advocating for equity, justice, and social progress. In April 2024, we peacefully protested at the Board of Trustees meeting to publicly affirm our support for DEI and to resist policies that threatened the existence of DEI across the UNC academic system.
