Loud explosion in S.F.’s South of Market after power pole is knocked down

San Francisco firefighters responded to a loud explosion Saturday morning in the South of Market neighborhood after a power pole was knocked down, cutting electricity to nearby buildings.

Several callers reported the blast on Main Street between Folsom and Howard streets  shortly after 6 a.m., according to the San Francisco Fire Department. It was not immediately clear what struck the pole.

No flames were visible, but some callers reported smoke nearby. Fire department units left after smoke was no longer visible 30 minutes later and contacted Pacific Gas and Electric Co…
