‘Speedy Day’: Family throws block party on anniversary of Javon Ward’s death

ALBANY — As speakers blared music, smoke from a grill wafted into the air and chatter abounded, more than 30 people gathered on Third Street Friday, many wearing white T-shirts with a message in red across the chest: “Speedy Day.”

This message, much like the block party itself, was a homage to 30-year-old Javon Ward, nicknamed “Speedy.” Ward, a father of four, died last year in a drive-by shooting that rocked the West Hill neighborhood where he grew up.
