Southern California Braces for Soaring Inland and Desert Temperatures

Southern California is gearing up for a significant warm-up, with temperatures in the inland and desert regions expected to reach well above normal in the coming days. According to the National Weather Service San Diego, there is a “moderate HeatRisk in the deserts” as the warming trend continues through Tuesday. The forecast anticipates highs possibly exceeding 95°F for parts of the Inland Empire and potentially over 110°F in the low deserts early next week.

An upper-level ridge of high pressure is partly to shoulder the blame for the incoming heat. The marine layer, however, keeps coastal areas cooler and may struggle to clear, especially in San Diego County, where a gloomy sky is likely to persist throughout the day. The Area Forecast Discussion released by the National Weather Service San Diego notes a “few degrees of warming is expected for inland areas,” with little change along the coast due to the lingering marine layer.

The forecast also has a potential curveball, as uncertainty exists about how high temperatures will go in the lower deserts. The National Weather Service mentions “lower confidence in temperatures in the low deserts” come Tuesday due to possible low-level moisture influx from the Gulf of California, which could limit the anticipated extreme warming…
