An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 shook the Bay Area on Sunday night, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The earthquake, which struck at 9:30 p.m., was centered about 1.2 miles northwest of Pinole at a depth of about 6 miles, which the USGS considers shallow. Nearby residents described a violent jolt lasting a few seconds, while people in Oakland, Richmond and Benicia reported a sharp thump.
