West Valley Humane Society on the brink of crisis, or a new chapter

CALDWELL — Howling dogs, piles of toys and a group of dedicated employees are a part of the West Valley Humane Society’s day-to-day operations.

On Thursday, Public Operations Manager Emily Gamble spent the day walking through the halls of the shelter, checking on dogs and cats with a variety of needs. She has been working at the shelter for three years and, despite funding challenges, has seen recent improvements.

Canyon County’s animal shelter has faced a tumultuous several years as the second-largest animal shelter in the state and is still struggling with large financial strains. Home to many of the area’s furry friends, the shelter is independent of the county and only partially funded by local municipalities…
