Salt Lake City raises Juneteenth flag, even with new state law in place

SALT LAKE CITY — Raising the Juneteenth flag is not new to Salt Lake City.

The Juneteenth holiday, which falls on June 19, celebrates the official emancipation of slaves, and it’s one that the state now officially recognizes.

“What we’re doing today is what we do every year,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “This is not a new thing. It is not a change in our practice. It is something that we do as a community: raising the Juneteenth flag every single year.”…
