Criminal proceedings in Salem mass stabbing on hold amid suspect’s mental evaluation

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Criminal proceedings involving a Salem stabbing incident that left 12 people injured are on pause.

In an order filed on Sunday, Marion County Pro Tem Judge Tiffany Underwood announced the case against suspect Tony Williams is on hold while attorneys determine whether he is mentally able to stand trial.

“The criminal proceedings against the Defendant are suspended pending the Defense evaluation of Mr. Williams’ fitness to proceed,” Underwood wrote. “Mr. Williams will remain held in the Marion County Jail without security pending further order of this court.”

The 42-year-old Bend resident was arrested on the evening of June 1 in connection to a mass stabbing at Union Gospel Mission. Salem police initially reported that 11 people were hospitalized following the event, but authorities later updated the victim count to 12.
