Alabama sheriff walks back protest violence comments, says he didn’t encourage ‘plowing’ through crowd

As cities across the country brace for a weekend of protests, Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said that demonstrators have a constitutional right to gather peacefully, and that he doesn’t expect any trouble at the upcoming “No Kings” rally on Saturday.

Speaking Wednesday, Burch addressed controversy over comments he made the day before on a radio show, where his remarks appeared to support granting legal immunity to drivers who strike protesters blocking roads.
