Lockeland Springs residents band together to preserve history and community traditions

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — On the border of Shelby Park, you’ll find a neighborhood full of homes with wraparound porches — this is Lockeland Springs.

“My neighbors, like the one standing over there behind you and the one who just got out of her car over here across the street,” Elizabeth Smith, President of the Lockeland Springs Neighborhood Association, said. “I know I can always call them if I need them.”

Lockeland Springs residents actually use their porches as connecting points, hosting “porch parties” during the warmer months. It’s a quirky tradition in a neighborhood with a rich history. That history starts on Fatherland Street, which is where the community got its start as a streetcar suburb.

“It creates a sense of appreciation for the past that we know that it was there and our historic overlay keeps us from losing all of that history by maintaining what we have,” Smith said…
