Mill Mountain Zoo is asking you to help name its brand-new sloth!

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Mill Mountain Zoo has welcomed its newest resident: a two-toed sloth, and they are asking for your help in choosing his name.

The sloth has been in the zoo’s care for about a month, building up his relationships with the zookeepers and just celebrating his 1st birthday. The zoo says he was born into captivity, so he is unable to be released into the wild, and they say that he has already been “capturing hearts” as he joins their animal educational team.

Sloths usually reside in the rainforests of South America. They are independent animals, spending a majority of their lives upside down in the trees, and their enclosure at Mill Mountain is full of branches and plenty of treats.

“I think because we are a small zoo, and we really want to reach the community, we want people to come out, learn about our animals here at the zoo,” Julia Franet-Hornbeck, a general curator for the zoo, said, “And because our sloth is new this is a perfect opportunity for guests to come out and see him up close and have the opportunity to feel like they were part of something special, which is picking a name for him.”…
