A Fruitland Park man was arrested when an officers spotted him driving down the highway on a lawnmower for the second time this year.
An officer spotted 61-year-old Charlie Bennie Harmon riding an orange commercial-grade Diesel lawnmower in the turn lane in the middle of U.S. Hwy. 27/441 and Spring Lake Road around 11:15 a.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department.
This was not the first time the officer had stopped Harmon on the same lawn mower in the same spot, as he had told Harmon on April 26 that he was not allowed to drive a lawn mower on public highways. On that day, the officer learned Harmon’s license was suspended in Sept. 2023 for refusing to take breath/urine/blood test and again in April 2025 for failure to pay. He also told Harmon it was a felony offense for him to drive on public roadways due to his suspensions, the report said.
During Monday’s incident, the officer initiated a traffic stop. He confirmed Harmon still had both active suspensions. Further investigation revealed he actually had six prior convictions for driving with a suspended license, the report said…
