British soccer icon David Beckham, 50, has received a knighthood from King Charles III for his contributions to sports and charitable work. He joins other notable figures like Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman and The Who’s frontman Roger Daltrey in the King’s birthday honors list. Beckham, now formally known as Sir David Beckham, expressed his humility and pride upon receiving the honor. His wife, Victoria, will now be known as Lady Victoria Beckham.
In a statement, Beckham reflected on his East London roots and the patriotic upbringing that instilled in him a deep pride in being British. He described captaining his country as “the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true.”
Beyond his athletic achievements, Beckham highlighted his work representing Britain internationally and collaborating with organizations supporting communities and inspiring future generations. He expressed gratitude for the recognition of work that brings him so much fulfillment.
The former Manchester United player boasts 115 appearances for England, including 59 as captain, and has won league titles in four countries. His philanthropy includes serving as a UNICEF ambassador since 2005 and more recently, as an ambassador for the King’s Foundation.
Oldman, 67, received his knighthood for services to drama, while Daltrey, 81, was recognized for his services to charity, particularly his long-standing work with the Teenage Cancer Trust. Daltrey expressed that the honor was a “dream come true,” particularly because of its connection to the charity.
