Museum cost overruns create angst

FORT PIERCE — City staff were once again on the defensive June 2 as concerns resurfaced over cost overruns tied to ongoing repairs and renovations at the Jackie L. Caynon Sr. Building at 1234 Avenue D.

This marks the second time this year the issue has been raised, as residents grow increasingly frustrated by delays in opening the long-anticipated Highwaymen Museum.

The issue first surfaced during the Feb. 11 Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency meeting, when City Commissioner Michael Broderick — in his role as an FPRA board member — requested the removal of a $45,000 change order from the typically non-discussion Consent Agenda for further review. Both Broderick and fellow board member Curtis Johnson Jr. voiced frustration over the mounting overruns. Their concerns deepened upon learning that at least three additional change orders were pending, all adding to the original not-to-exceed $513,945.30 contract awarded to Fort Lauderdale-based Journey C&D Group for the renovation…
