KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) – The rhythmic booming of drums could be heard through Downtown Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon as part of the Juneteenth Celebration drew crowds to Bronson Park.
Juneteenth recognizes the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in 1865. Non-profit Rootead’s Interim Executive Director, Carman James, said Saturday’s celebration is meant to reflect on that history as well as celebrate liberation for all.
“We want everyone to celebrate all freedom,” she said. “All Freedom. Freedom of humanity. That’s what makes America beautiful. Freedom for all. All are welcome and we specifically hold space for black and brown folk because historically, it’s been suppressed, so we continue to you know, celebrate.”…
