Tragedy Strikes Popular Tourist Spot as Bridge Collapses in India

At least two people are dead and 32 injured after an iron bridge collapsed Sunday at a popular tourist destination in India’s western Maharashtra state. The bridge, located in the Kundamala area of Pune district, gave way, sending numerous visitors plunging into the swollen river below.

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, confirming the fatalities and stating that at least six of the injured are in critical condition. A search and rescue operation, involving the National Disaster Response Force and other units, is underway for those swept away by the river’s current. Six individuals have been rescued so far.

While heavy rains had swollen the river in recent days, it was not raining at the time of the collapse. The area is known as a popular picnic spot and was reportedly crowded with visitors when the bridge gave way.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Chief Minister Fadnavis, offering condolences and pledging all necessary resources to the state government.

This tragedy underscores ongoing safety concerns surrounding India’s infrastructure, which has seen similar disasters in the past. A 2022 bridge collapse in Gujarat claimed the lives of at least 132 people, highlighting the continuing need for improved safety measures.
