Boy Scout’s bat boxes provide habitat for endangered mammals in West Michigan parks

KENT COUNTY, MI – Samuel Konyndyk, 18, has been perfecting the design of his multi-chambered bat boxes for years.

He began with designing and installing the tiny mammal habitats at his grandparents’ cottage, testing the effectiveness of different locations and heights and researching which options resulted in the most bat visitors.

Now, the recent graduate of Lowell High School and member of Lowell’s Scout Troop 102 has partnered with the Kent County Parks Department to install eight bat boxes in three West Michigan parks…
