The Patriots looked to win their sixth consecutive state championship Saturday afternoon against the Mendon Hornets, a team they’ve faced in three straight years at Secchia Stadium in East Lansing.
But unfortunately for the Patriots, the third time was the charm for Mendon, as they claimed their first ever softball state championship in an 11-1 rout.
“This feels pretty good,” Mendon coach Steve Butler said. “We’ve had our share of football championships. My assistants (Mike Smith, Steve Schabes) and I played on championship football teams back in the early 1990s. To get one in softball, especially with two daughters on the team who are seniors, it’s really cool. It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever.”…
