USA Paralympian helps River Cities Track honor 30 years of training young athletes

The River Cities Track Club celebrated 30 years of training young athletes to be successful in life over the weekend with their annual Lawrence Word Classic track and field meet at Lee Hedges Stadium.

The event brought out plenty of celebrants from past club memberships, such as Troy Lewis and Shannon Williams, along with USA Paralympics medalist Roderick Green, who trained under one of the River Cities creators in Juan Plaza. And Huntington’s early graduate, Landon Gibbs, was on hand for one more performance at Lee Hedges.

It all started when LSUS’s Dr. Kyle Pierce called a meeting in November 1994 with Jerry Byrd Sr., Alex Garrett, LeRon Caldwell, Cheryl Gray and Plaza to discuss starting a track club…
