Officers who captured Charleston church shooter speak out for 1st time: ‘It was like staring Satan in the face’

SHELBY, N.C. (WBTV) – Police officers in Shelby, North Carolina, joked in 2015 that a 21-year-old who murdered nine people at a church 250 miles away would come through their small town.

Sergeant Mike Myers, Sergeant Dan Bernat, and officer Scott Hamrick did not anticipate, however, that they’d be the ones to take Dylann Roof into custody.

“Any time anything goes on, we say ‘well, they’ll come through Shelby,” Sgt. Myers said. “I don’t know why, but it’s attractive. They either drive through or come to Shelby.”…
