Fireworks to light up Cedar Rapids as bans lift, but CRPD warns of strict regulations

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Firework tents are popping up all around Iowa as July Fourth nears and a new law lifts firework bans from cities, counties and other communities. The Cedar Rapids Police Department (CRPD) says it’s time for some straight talk about what’s legal when it comes to fireworks.

The new state law mandates that fireworks are legal to use on:

  • July 3, 9 a.m. – 10 p.m.
  • July 4, 9 a.m. – 11 p.m.
  • December 31st, 9a.m. – 12:30 a.m. (Jan. 1)

CRPD says they will give out citations to anyone illegally setting off fireworks.

Fireworks are only allowed on your private property or property you have permission to use. Fireworks are not allowed at public spaces like streets and parks…
