Local sheriff’s offices talk immigration warrant program agreement

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Potter County Sheriff’s Office and Curry County Sheriff’s Office shared details on the 287(g) program agreements.

According to Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas through the agreement, if a person gets arrested locally for any offense and it’s suspected they do not have legal citizenship in the United States, a trained deputy within PCSO can check to see their status if they are wanted through Immigration and Custom Enforcement. According to Thomas if they are wanted by ICE the person must resolve their case locally first.

“It’s not people are going out and arresting immigrants that are here illegally,” explained Thomas. “It’s nothing like that. These people are already here, and they have committed a crime. That may have been who knows why their status has been deleted? We don’t know that. All we can know, our guys can look at the database and look and see that they have a detainer on them, and once they see that detainer, then they put the detainer on them, but they still have to finish out whatever crime they’re in jail for.”

Thomas shared that this is not a new program for them, and they have had this agreement for years. According to Thomas they have three people trained to check those statuses and every two years an official comes in to inspect their program…
