Texas screwstem plant safe despite habitat threat concerns

HOUSTON (KIAH) — Have you ever heard of the Texas screwstem? In case you haven’t, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it is a slender herbaceous plant that usually measures up to 6-14 inches tall and can be found in East Texas and some parts of Louisiana.

The Texas screwstem has several features that make it unique among plants, so the question was raised whether it qualifies for endangered or threatened species status.

After an independent review of the plant, it was found that the Texas screwstem plant does not qualify as either endangered or threatened. Through its evaluation, the service determined that factors such as habitat loss, invasive species and severe weather like drought were not enough of threat to impact the plant and justify protection.

The service added that despite the screwstem plant failing to qualify for protection, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will continue to provide conservation and research efforts.
