Toxic waste cleanup underway in underserved Greenville community

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) A cleanup is underway in a Greenville area that’s long been underserved, but with the help of a new initiative, it’s getting a fresh start.

Newtown is a neighborhood in Greenville County, located just outside of downtown. Nestled between two railroad tracks, it’s home to the former Bramlett Manufactured Gas Plant and an unpermitted landfill that contaminated its wetlands.

“About 95,000 tons of garbage from deconstructed facilities throughout our county was allowed to be dumped in this neighborhood,” said Stacey Mills, pastor of Mountain View Baptist Church…
