‘You can’t go out there:’ couple says mosquitos, standing water have filled fire breaks

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — If you take a stroll with Michael Van Houten in his backyard in the Avalon neighborhood of Carolina Forest, you can tell he’s put some work into it. He’s got a white fence, nice sitting area and fire pit…that he can’t use.

“So all of the neighbors out here, we just can’t go in our backyards,” he said. “It’s like, why do you even have a backyard, you can’t go out there.”

That’s because of what is now on the other side of his fence. He said there’s permanent standing water where crews came through to prevent the spread of the Covington Drive wildfire…which has brought permanent mosquitos and flies…
