Mental evaluations ordered for man charged in fatal U.S. 23 crash

MONROE — A judge has ordered competency and criminal-responsibility evaluations for a man charged in a U.S. 23 crash that killed a pregnant woman last month.

Hunter Brandon Scott Suto, 24, of Oregon, is charged with reckless driving causing death and failure to stop at the scene of an accident when at fault, causing death for the May 17 crash that killed Kaitlyn Ann Ellison, 32, of Petersburg, Mich.

Defense lawyer Jeff Osment, who along with his client appeared by video link Tuesday in Monroe County District Court, said that based on past mental-health issues and a forensic examination, Mr. Suto’s case warranted examination of his competency to stand trial as well as the criminal responsibility evaluation…
