SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Rocky Mountain Power (RMP) is encouraging customers to take steps to conserve energy and reduce strain on the electrical grid this summer, which is when they see highest usage rates each year.
The highest demand for electricity hits on a hot weekday summer afternoon, RMP says, usually from 3 p.m. to 8p.m., which is when power is needed to operate irrigation systems and air conditioners.
Here are some tips to reduce energy usage:
- Try to change your usage habits so that you use energy in the early morning or late evening when possible.
- Set the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher, health permitting.
- Turn off lights, computers, televisions, and appliances when not in use.
- Open windows in the evening and early morning to let in cool air, and use the intake setting on window fans to bring in more cool air.
- Keep air moving in the home using ceiling, window, attic, and portable fans.
Rocky Mountain Power says that it is “well positioned” to meet summer customer demand, by monitoring substations and circuits each day to determine which have the highest use so that any issues can be addressed…
