ALBANY — All 50 states and U.S. territories will benefit from a $7.4 billion agreement with the pharmaceutical company accused of facilitating the opioid crisis, New York Attorney General Letitia James said Monday.
The multibillion-dollar agreement with Purdue Pharma, which was agreed to by all 55 attorneys general representing U.S. states and territories, will wrest control of the company from the Sackler family. Once finalized, it would mark the culmination of a years-long legal battle over the company’s role in creating and furthering opioid dependence in the United States.
“For decades, the Sacklers put profits over people, and played a leading role in fueling the epidemic of opioid addictions and overdoses,” James said in a statement. “While no amount of money can fully heal the destruction they caused, these funds will save lives and help our communities fight back against the opioid crisis.”…
