‘Nola mattered’: Candlelight vigil for murdered toddler calls community to action

There were tears at a candlelight vigil held Monday night in the memory of Nola Dinkins, the toddler whose mother has been charged with her murder.

According to investigators, Nola, an emaciated 3-year-old, was beaten by her mother 15 to 20 times with a belt, and then her lifeless body was put in a suitcase and left in a vacant field near the North East, Md., home of the mother’s boyfriend. The mother then claimed the girl had been kidnapped in Newark.

Days after that news broke, the emotions among people who never knew the child were no less raw. The question of “why” was prevalent…
