Local Teen Knighted by Papal Prince
19-year-old Californian Sydney Thackray has received a prestigious honor from the Vatican, becoming one of the youngest Americans ever knighted by Prince Lorenzo de’ Medici. The “Dame” title was bestowed upon Thackray in a historic Roman cathedral on June 1, 2025. Prince de’ Medici nominated the teen in recognition of her extensive humanitarian work, which includes youth arts programs, cross-cultural initiatives, and international service.
“Standing in a space once graced by Michelangelo, I felt the weight of legacy,” Thackray shared, describing the ceremony as a deeply personal experience. “The oath wasn’t symbolic; it was a promise.”
While known for her acclaimed acting career, including a lead role in “Faith Fighter” and an upcoming thriller with GEMS Golden Eagle Movie Studios, Thackray’s commitment to service has garnered global attention. “You don’t need to be royalty to serve,” she emphasized. “You just need a willingness to show up, care deeply, and act.”
Following the ceremony, Thackray plans to develop youth-focused programs and participate in global initiatives combining storytelling, community service, and cultural restoration. She will also share her message with students and service leaders through various media appearances and speaking engagements.
Prince de’ Medici has knighted several other Americans, including renowned royal auctioneer Brigitte Kruse, named “Ambassador of the Arts” and awarded the title of Cavaliere for her philanthropy. Oregonian Mary Jean Thompson also received the honor in 2019, recognized for her heritage linked to Crusader-era nobility and her work in international diplomacy.
Thompson expressed deep gratitude for the honor, calling it a “beautiful gift.” The Prince has also recognized numerous other U.S. citizens, including Peter Miller, Tom Praasel, and Christina Cox, for their support of emerging artists.
