GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Corewell Health in Grand Rapids is now offering a new, non-invasive therapy to treat liver cancer. Histotripsy uses a focused beam of ultrasound to “essentially liquify the tissues.”
“It creates a micro bubble cloud at a point in space,” said Dr. James Morrison, an interventional radiologist at Corewell Health. “So, anything around that point is left untouched. It’s safe to use in soft tissue, and it doesn’t cause any ill effects to the normal tissue surrounding the tumor.”
Morrison said Corewell Health is one of about 30 centers in the country offering histotripsy. The procedure was FDA-approved in 2023 to treat liver cancer, but is currently in trials to treat other soft tissue tumors.
“Personally, I think it’s going to be transformational,” said Morrison. “It’s an unusual thing in medicine to have something so completely new.”…
