A new program in Riverside County is giving shelter dogs a much-needed taste of freedom. It’s called “Dog Day Out”—and it lets volunteers take adoptable dogs on short, supervised field trips. From a walk in the park to a ride through town, these outings offer the pups a break from the kennel environment. The idea is simple: happy dogs are more likely to get adopted. And when they’re outside, they also get valuable exposure to potential adopters.Participants can take a dog out for just a few hours—or an entire day. Some even take them to coffee shops or on hikes. The goal is to ease the stress these animals feel behind shelter walls. And for volunteers, it’s a fun and fulfilling way to make a difference. The program is now underway at shelters in Jurupa Valley and San Jacinto.Staff say it’s already boosting adoption interest and dog morale. And with more public support, the county hopes to expand it.
