The end of spring brings the beginning of one of South Carolina’s most beloved crops: The tomato.

The Greenville Journal recently reached out to Hartness Farm manager Stephen McRae to get a few tips on the sun-loving plant. Here’s what he had to say:

  1. Check your soil’s pH before planting. Tests go for roughly $6.
  2. Before choosing a spot to plant your tomato garden, track the sunlight exposure in your yard as most plants need at least six hours of sunlight a day.
