New York State Facing Lawsuit Over SNAP Benefits

New York state is facing a federal lawsuit for failing to protect recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from benefit theft.

Legal Services NYC filed the suit in June 2025, accusing the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) of negligence after at least $51 million in SNAP benefits were stolen through “skimming” schemes from 2023 to 2025.
