One of the things I love most about Louisville is its hole-in-the-wall eateries. They quickly become your favorite spots if you’re lucky enough to stumble upon them. A friend invited me to Hauck’s Corner a few weeks ago, and I’d never heard of the casual, family-friendly neighborhood restaurant. I loved everything about Hauck’s, and now that I’ve been, I can’t wait to return.
Hauck’s Corner has a long and storied history. Hauck’s Handy Store opened on the corner of Goss and Hoertz Avenues in 1912. Its original owners, Elizabeth and William Hauck, passed the business to their son, George, in 1946, who started beloved traditions that continue today, like the World Championship Dainty Contest, a competition based on a traditional street game. George and his family were known for caring for their community and helping if someone was late paying a bill or short on groceries. Even into his ninth decade, George was often in the store or sitting on a bench out front.
The Hauck family closed the store in 2019, and George passed away in 2020. However, new owners reopened the business as Hauck’s Corner in 2022. Its reopening debuted an extensive renovation, which preserved and reused as much of the original structure as possible. Hauck’s Corner is a beloved Schnitzelburg watering hole that serves delicious food and drinks and brings the community together.
I entered Hauck’s Corner expecting a small, cozy dining area and was pleasantly surprised to see many indoor dining tables and an extensive patio. There were many colorful umbrellas and dozens of outdoor tables, benches, and chairs. String lights overhead promised a fun nighttime atmosphere. We sat at a patio table near a children’s playground and cornhole set. I noted that Hauck’s Corner is ideal for families to gather; the kids can play while adults catch up.
My friend and I reviewed the menu. Hauck’s Corner serves starters like Poutine, Fried Pickle Sticks, a Giant Pretzel, and Bang Bang Shrimp. Entrees include tacos with fish, veggies, shrimp, steak, chicken, and smoked pork. There are also burgers like The Hauckfather with two patties, American cheese, bacon, red onions, and a fried egg, and handheld rolls like the Dirty Bird Deluxe with grilled chicken, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, and honey mustard…
