Peoria cop assaulted in protest confusion

A 23-year-old man was arrested last week after assaulting a Peoria police officer. A Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) warrant execution at 67th Avenue and Cheryl Drive caused a protest that became violent, residents thinking it was a case involving the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The officer is “in great spirits” and uninjured, Mayor Jason Beck told the Peoria Times. However, the city is coming after anyone involved in the altercation.

“Somebody that thinks that they can impede a police officer in their duty by trying to drag the police officer away from the arrest or drag the person that they’re arresting out of the situation and thinks they can put hands on one of my police officers, they’re going to get hooked and booked,” Beck said. “It’s that simple. I’m fed up with it and every mayor and every elected official should be saying the exact same thing.”…
