Juneteenth celebrations thrive in Bakersfield despite national challenges

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Federal actions aimed at eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs have caused some Juneteenth organizers around the country to push back, or even cancel celebrations honoring the historic day. However, the NAACP chapter in one of California’s fastest-growing cities continues to celebrate freedom on June 19th and into the weekend.

Bianca Haynes, an event coordinator with the NAACP Bakersfield, hinted at the current social and political climate, saying “There are definitely measures in place right now that are trying to erase some of our history, to erase the monumental things that black people have contributed to this country, and we can’t let that happen”
