Authorities in Florida’s Treasure Coast have arrested several individuals believed to be involved in a sophisticated vehicle cloning scheme, as local sheriff’s offices carried out a series of raids in Port St. Lucie and Indian River County, according to WPTV.
In coordinated efforts, detectives executed search warrants and retrieved over a dozen stolen vehicles that had been re-VINed using salvaged or rebuilt identification numbers, the extent of the operation brought to light when Sheriff Richard Del Toro of St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office pointed out the potential scope of the criminal activity, he said “This is just I think the tip of the iceberg on this,” in an interview obtained by CBS12; such schemes pose a significant risk to unsuspecting car buyers.
