West Branch marks Juneteenth with a celebration of its ties to the Underground Railroad

WEST BRANCH, Iowa — West Branch got to take a step into the history books as they held a tour around local spots from the Civil War. The town represents a significant place for slaves during the 1800s, with four locations being a part of the underground railroad in Cedar County.

Locals like Martha Moore Davis grabbed a seat on the bus traveling around historic sites, and said these historical roots transcend generations.

“I think there was a real sense of pride,” Davis said. “I felt that way I think my mom and dad felt that way my sisters and my brothers. Also, that this is where Herbert Hoover was born. That’s also a significant part of West Branch.”…
