‘An inconvenience’: Asheville drivers prepare for impact of I-40 closure after rockslide

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — This isn’t the first time that I-26 has been the alternate route after an I-40 shutdown in Western North Carolina. However, drivers weren’t expecting it to happen twice in nine months.

Pamela Danner, who manages the Hot Spot gas station in North Asheville right off I-26, said traffic after Hurricane Helene was a “nightmare.”

“Terrible, absolutely terrible,” she said. “You couldn’t go to Asheville without sitting in the traffic on the interstate for hours. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the things that I saw after Helene.”…
