Charlottesville Police hits brakes on new technology amid concerns over data access

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Charlottesville Police Department no longer plans to use a new data technology system called Peregrine that City Council originally approved.

After the close decision to allocate $150,000 to Charlottesville Police to use Peregrine’s services, Chief Michael Kochis says the Council members who were initially in favor began expressing reservations about how the data could be used in immigration enforcement efforts.

“There’s just a concern right now that the federal government could get access to data like that,” Kochis said. “Understanding that if the will of council is to no longer have that program, then we’re not going use it.”…
