Despite recent gun violence, Lafayette shootings down; chief credits community engagement, recruiting

LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — Recent gun violence in Lafayette has raised concerns, but police report a decline in overall shootings this year.

Two shootings occurred just days apart, with incidents on Chester and Pine streets and a grocery store parking lot. Police Chief Paul Trouard said these were the 24th and 25th shootings in 2025, down from 36 during the same period last year.

No injuries or arrests were reported from the Chester Street shooting, but a car and two homes were hit by gunfire. Two men were hospitalized after the grocery store incident. One has been released, and police have yet to determine a motive or make an arrest…
