JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) -Banks and post offices are closed for Juneteenth because it’s a federal holiday. But a worker for the State of Mississippi would have to use PTO to take the day off.
Ten pieces of legislation were filed in the 2025 session in an attempt to include Juneteenth. All died in committee.
“It’s our Independence Day as African Americans here, and that’s important,” noted Rep. Daryl Porter, who filed one of the bills attempting to make Juneteenth a state holiday. “It’s an important part of our history that needs to be shared and needs to be recognized. We need to be putting more progressive ideas in place. And we need to be taking more progressive stances as well, and I think making Juneteenth a holiday is just a piece of the puzzle.”…
