Firefighters mopping up Rice Road Fire

Firefighters have begun mopping up a fire that Thursday afternoon led to a “go now” evacuation notice affecting some 30 homes in Mapleton, about 45 miles west of Eugene.

The Rice Road Fire also briefly shut down Highway 126, the main route for travel between Eugene and the coastal city of Florence.

“The forward spread of the fire was stopped at 4.6 acres,” according to a statement Friday from the Oregon Department of Forestry, which also noted that power was restored last night after an outage connected to the fire…
